Week 7: Assignment 2

I chose to comment on the following articles:

  • Who is Buying Teen Books? Christian Science Monitor Sep 14, 2012

  • I knew that adults were reading and buying teen fiction but not at the levels reported in the article.  I was particularly surprised by the age demographic for those buying the teen titles.  I will pay more attention to Amazon's "best of the month" picks for teen titles.

  • The Next Big Thing YALSA; The Hub, Oct 2012

  • I like reading teen fiction.  I was pleased when my favorite author, Adriana Trigiani, wrote a teen book.  I was at first surprised to see James Patterson and his Maximum Ride series when it first came out.  I like these titles more than his adult ones.  I love Carl Hiaasen's books in both adult and teen.

    1. Hi Erika C., I wasn't surprised either by the number of adults reading teen fiction. One thing I have noticed when adult library customers talk to me about their favorite teen books is that they enjoy the characters and the challenge of evaluating good vs evil. Strong female characters also seem to be an appeal factor, I've noticed as well.

    2. Hi Erika,
Your comments caught my eye because Trigiani is also one of my favorite authors. If you pick up her Viola novels, let me know what you think. :-)
Guess I better make a comment that's more work-related... I thought it would be valuable to keep an eye on Amazon's "best of the month" picks for teens. Since I hardly ever buy books, I often forget to take a look at Amazon's lists.

    3. Hey Erika! I was also not surprised by the statistics stated in the article about the percentage of YA readers being adults. I entirely fall into the category myself so I felt it was accurate. I find great stuff and not so great stuff in YA, just as I do in the adult fiction section. I love reading different genres within YA and find that I read genres in YA that I wouldnt pursue as an adult fiction title, such as paranomal romance. I probably couldn't name off the top of my head a paranormal romance adult fiction title that I have recently read but have at least 3 YA ones on my desk right now. Mermaids, werewolves, otherworldly elements- they don't seem to be the focus of the books as the theme often is in adult fiction and they are quick reads and parts of series.
